Afraid of the Devil

Oh, how frightenly weak we have become.

In preparation for a guest appearance at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta, the marching band at C.D. Hylton High School had a logical and seemingly innocuous idea: play a Georgia-themed song. They decided on “The Devil Went Down to Georgia,” by the Charlie Daniels Band.

But early this month, a local newspaper, the Potomac News, published a letter by a Woodbridge resident who, after having seen the C.D. Hylton Bulldawg Marching Band perform the country-western hit at a football game, wondered how a song about the devil could be played at school events, because of the separation of church and state.

Although the frightened reaction of the band director exasperates (you’ll note the author of the letter was simply asking a clever philosophical question, and homeschools his children, etc.), it is really the culture war that Christians (and conservatives more generally) have lost that is even more distressing.

A different culture would have produced a different response.

Another example of why Christians cannot leave the Public Square to those who work endlessly to remove us and our views from the Public Square.

Although “The Devil” will not be performed by this band at the Peach Bowl Parade, you know Satan is quite pleased about the outcome and how it was reached.

UPDATE:

Eugene Volokh reports the band director overreacted — again, only because many have been brainwashed about some “wall” between church and state.

(Which only demonstrates the laughable state of public education in this country.)
