Mother’s Day

Sunday, May 8th, 2011

A wonderful Mother’s Day with my wife and daughter in the Sierra. It was dance recital day, and we awakened to snow. Then the sun came out. It was a weekend of reflection, and anticipation for the future — making some decisions for my family and our time together. I should know more this week. [...]

“Missed Opportunities”

Monday, August 31st, 2009

A euphemism if there ever was one. Word is that there were multiple and repeated failures of the law enforcement system in the Dugard case: police investigation, parole officers, prison system. It turns out the Garrido was given a fifty year sentence for his earlier sex crimes but was inexplicably let out after only ten [...]

Life in the Mountains

Bear visits hospital. Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe had a potential wayward visitor last week when a bear strolled through the first set of automatic glass doors at the hospital’s main entrance. Imagine those Auxiliary members’ surprise when they looked up from the front desk and saw that furry critter ambling toward the [...]

Angora Forest Fire Contained!

Monday, July 2nd, 2007

Woo Hoo! Many thanks to all who have prayed. Prayers definitely slowed the winds that were predicted to be much more significant over the course of several days. Fire is expected to be completely extinguished next Tuesday. Thanks again for all your prayers.

Tahoe is Beautiful (and Kim has an iPhone)

Saturday, June 30th, 2007

We arrived around 2 AM Saturday morning (had to take an Apple Store detour — see below), and there was no smell of smoke in the air, and wind was calm. Since our gas was off, we drove to Ernie’s for breakfast and for the first time saw the burned trees in the Angora area. [...]

Angora Forest Fire Update — Day 5

Thursday, June 28th, 2007

Good news — 70% contained! Two days in a row where high winds were predicted but did not come — the power of Prayer! The Tahoe Daily Tribune blog is an indispensable source of information, as is the Incident Web. More containment near our home, which is good news as well. What was an uncontrolled [...]

Angora Forest Fire Update — Day 4

Wednesday, June 27th, 2007

Good news. 55% contained and winds were much more calm than predicted — thank you for your prayers. Carolyn’s school teacher is married to a hero: A firefighter. It was a rough time, you know we are right down the trail from you. [He] worked the first 30 hours of the fire and was called [...]

Angora Forest Fire Update

Tuesday, June 26th, 2007

Two great sites for those wanting to track the progress. First, the Tahoe Daily Tribune fire blog is very helpful. Second, the Incident website has maps and pictures (although a bit slow since it apparently is now widely know). Yesterday, when we awoke, we decided to head back up to Tahoe and try to retrieve [...]

Angora Forest Fire

Monday, June 25th, 2007

Tahoe Daily Tribune has updated information (good video and slideshow from KCRA Sacramento). Our South Lake Tahoe home is very close to the fire line. God will decide whether we get to keep it or not. We are all safe in the Bay Area. Please pray for the safety of our firefighters, and our friends [...]

Chinese Air Pollution in Tahoe

Wonderful. An export we don’t need. . . .
