Liberal Fascism At Work

Mark Hemmingway notes how the Left today wins argument — by leaving their opponent on the cutting room floor:

I just watched Jonah’s interview on The Daily Show and my head is still spinning. What was that? The interview segment began with an apology from Jon Stewart saying that the interview lasted 18 minutes and they had to cut it. What ensued was a choppy mess, largely consisting of Stewart’s heated questions and then cutting away from Jonah before he could fully respond. It’s bad enough that people reviewing Jonah’s book can’t be bothered to read it. But inviting him on national TV, attacking the book and then randomly editing the whole thing into incoherence just seems to take things to a whole new level.

Jonah Goldberg is not surprised:

Mark – Thanks. Yeah, I knew I was in trouble when the interview just wouldn’t end — and I got the sense it wasn’t ending because Stewart didn’t feel like he “won” so he had to keep going. I haven’t watched it (though I pretty much never watch myself on TV), but I knew that editing wasn’t going to help me. Still, I knew I wasn’t going to get a supportive reaction from the guy. Anyway, more thoughts tomorrow perhaps.

Buy the important book that is causing all the stir.

UPDATE:

Mark Steyn:

There’s a bad faith aspect to what Stewart did. Recently I was asked to go on certain TV shows in Canada and Australia neither of which are known for their sympathy to chaps like me. I said yeah, sure, I’d be happy to do it as long as the interviews went out live. That way, it’s a clean fight and may the best man win. The Oz show said no, the Canucks are mulling it over but are insulted by my making such a request. Jon Stewart victory-through-editing is why.

UPDATE II:

Excellent idea!

Okay, so you had to jam an 18-minute interview with Jonah into a 6-minute segment. But how hard would it be to make the full interview available on your website? Or to let us post it here?

And Hot Air has some video — actually very interesting video showing the shameless Jon Stewart explain how he just didn’t have enough time.

Right.
