Contemplating McCain

OK, this is off the cuff. . . .

I have not seen his speech, but both Rich Lowry at NRO and Paul Mirengoff at Power Line say essentially the same thing: McCain is an adult.

Lowry:

Excellent, hitting all the McCain themes—character, restoring faith in government, victory in the war in terror, respect for opponents, service to a cause greater than self, patriotism. You have to love any speech that prompts people to start chanting, “USA, USA.”

Mirengoff:

McCain operates at a level of seriousness that the rest of the field struggles, usually unsuccessfully, to match. That’s why, for all the things I disagree with McCain about, I don’t find myself terribly disappointed by tonight’s result.

Me: I’m still struggling over McCain’s support for:

1) Gang of 14 which throttled a robust Republican response to Democrat intransigence on Federal Court nominees, and
2) His support for amnesty of illegal aliens, and
3) Taking away our First Amendment rights via McCain-Feingold.

Those are three pills I cannot swallow right now.

Having said that, I do fully agree he is an adult, and I have said many, many times, we need an adult in the Oval Office in 2009.

But, I still think we need a strong Executive, and I think Mitt Romney will provide that. We have not yet begun to understand what the emerging China means to us, and given his experience both in the private and public sector, I think Mitt is better suited to lead us through the many, many challenges that lie ahead.
