Love of Opera

Opera is like sushi. Get bad opera, and it is hard to try it again. But, if you have good opera, you want it often. Welcome to the San Francisco Opera. I started with Saint-Saëns' Samson and Deliah. I was impressed with the production as well as the musical performances. Then, I indulged in a stunning production of Tannhauser. Keep an eye on Director Graham Vick -- his production was a feast for the eyes in addition to the famous Wagner arias and choruses. Next, the World Premeire of Philip Glass' Appomattox. I am not a huge fan of Glass' music, but this opera was compelling, and even more so for a history lover like myself. Then, two delightful flavors of The Magic Flute. The full length German version which was simply delightful, and The Magic Flute for Families sung in English. Carolyn loves Mozart's Magic Flute -- both Papageno as well as the crocoguins, tigoons and giraffestritches. She used her opera glasses early and often. And, do not miss Erika Miklósa as the Queen of the Night -- dazzling in her San Francisco Opera debut as seen in this video. This past Wednesday was Pucinni's lovely La Rondine. Not as famous as La Boheme, Madama Butterfly or Tosca, but a touching opera which portrays the innocence of pre-World War I Europe fading away. Angela Gheorghiu did not disappoint in her San Francisco Opera debut as this video highlights. Enjoy the video clips above to sample each of the operas. As a friend says, opera is the last grand entertainment. So do enjoy, and if you are able, partake. No wonder the San Francisco Opera is considered one of the best. Simply breathtaking.
