Not So Supreme Court?
I simply groaned when I heard that Harriet Miers had been nominated to the Supreme Court.
Evidently I'm not alone.
My biggest gripe is why didn't W pick the most qualified? That will be my hangup throughout the confirmation process. The theme this morning is that W think Miers is the best to support the President in the Global War on Terror.
We Shall See, and that is a phrase I didn't want to have to write about this selection.
Let's quickly survey the blogosphere for The Good, The Bad and The Ugly this morning (and this will likely swing greatly through the day given lack of knowledge about Miers generally).
• The Good
Short list this, but it exists.
Hugh Hewitt says relax -- but only a B+?
Bench Memos notes the support of John Leo (as did Hugh) and Jay Sekulow.
More supporters when I find them. Even I may eventually come around, but the Most Qualified is irritating me now.
• The Bad
ProLife Blogs wants to learn more.
Don Singleton recounts a distressing scorecard from Right Wing News.
Does this hyperbole as recounted by David Frum help W and our view of Miers' judgement -- Allison Hayward is doubtful.
PowerLine is disappointed (likely to be a much overused term this day).
As is Ed Morrissey:
Not only does Harriet Miers not look like the best candidate for the job, she doesn't even look like the best female candidate for the job.My teeth grate. We move from Disappointed to Michelle Malkin and Utterly Underwhelmed. This list is too long to keep up with now, but you get the idea. • The Ugly Perhaps the most damaging quote comes from the comments section The Volokh Conspiracy:
Instead, this job gets filled as if it is a second tier cabinet post.Ouch (especially given FEMA's recent good times)! David Frum's latest calls the choice an "unforced error." The apoplectic live at Confirm Them -- just keep scrolling (and read some comments). David Frum's quote of Miers' judge of W's intellect noted above in The Bad will be talking (chuckle?) points by everyone by lunch:
Okay, what I really want to write rhymes with muck and tush, but for now I need information. I have read somewhere in the past week that Miers has said that Bush is the most brilliant man she has ever met. Is this confirmed??!!?? Was this an on-the-record quote? Is it verifiable? I desperately, and quickly, need to know whether this is verifiable, because I am writing a VERY quick-release column on this and I want to include the quote if it is indeed true.No wonder Harry Reid and Bob Beckel are pleased -- they are witnessing a great schism in W's base. An Ugly Unforced Error indeed.
