Texas is Great — San Francisco is a Disgrace
Having been a former citizen of Texas, there are no finer people.
[O]ne thing I have noticed that is missing from the mainstream coverage of this tragedy is just what is going on in Houston and the rest of Texas. If there was ever a time to see the true spirit of America it is now. There are so many people in this city that are offering up their homes and apartments to give the evacuees a place to say. There are so many people going out to volunteer this weekend (Labor Day Weekend, I might add) to help these disaster victims. Radio stations are taking donatoins in exchange for playing songs, any songs (even bizarre songs like the one sung by the loser from American Idol) and the donations are getting as high as $100,000. There are so many churches and community service organizations that are setting up stations to collect donations and just plain help. The New Orleans mayor is on the radio asking who the people of New Orleans can rely upon. Well, it seems that they can rely upon the citizens of Texas.Being a current citizen of California, I'm ashamed of the proposed San Francisco plan.
San Francisco officials had said they would accommodate some of the hurricane victims in vacant public housing, a plan that drew criticism from city supervisors and community leaders, particularly after Mayor Gavin Newsom said the available units are empty because no one else wants to live there. "If (the units) are available because nobody wants them, then why would you put your guests there?" asked San Francisco Supervisor Sophie Maxwell, whose Bayview-Hunters Point district is home to the rundown projects. "Their homes were destroyed. We have to treat these people with dignity and respect. I think we're going to find the best place for these people." The 100 units that were to be made available are in four San Francisco Housing Authority projects with a high incidence of drug and gang activity and homicide and a predominantly African American, working-poor population. . . . Newsom said midday Wednesday that the 100 available units are vacant because qualified families who have been offered them were worried about the area's crime rate. But both Newsom and Housing Authority Executive Director Gregg Fortner, who grew up in New Orleans, expressed doubt that the evacuees coming to San Francisco would find its public housing foreign or frightening. "Let me tell you this with respect. I've seen where a lot of the people were living before. I'll take West Point and Middle Point," Newsom said. For those who don't know, Hizzoner Newsom is proposing to put evacuees in housing areas that are not safe -- no matter what Hizzoner says. I must really question if the Mayor is racist -- "I've seen where a lot of the people were living before." Just what does that mean? Gimme a break Mayor -- you redefine Unbelievable. Let's see you and your family live there (without any other protection whatsoever) for a month -- just you and your family. Unbelievable -- alas the Legacy Media snooze (because they're not planning to take in any Katrina families either?). So, you see, bleeding heart liberals put their brothers and sisters in gang- and drug-infested housing, while Texans welcome those in need into their homes. Actions speak much, much louder than words. The Left is bankrupt -- intellectually and morally. UPDATE: And what does The New York Times think of Texas?
In The International Herald Tribune published by the Times in Paris, Romero's article is on page 15 and it begins with a line not in the Times, which reads "No one would accuse [Houston] of being timid in the scramble to profit from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina."Bankrupt -- rewind the tape -- Bankrupt.
