Gay Marriage Terminator

Gay Marriage Terminator speaks, and will veto.
Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger announced Wednesday that he will veto a bill that would allow gay marriages in California. Schwarzenegger said the legislation, given final approval Tuesday by lawmakers, would conflict with the intent of voters when they approved a ballot initiative five years ago. Proposition 22 prevents California from recognizing same-sex marriages performed in other states or countries.
Refreshingly radical concept -- let the people decide. Ed Morrissey of Captain's Quarters notes the Governor had better run for President now -- he is now blackballed from Hollywood. La Shawn Barber can rest easily tonight. Rick at Stones Cry Out asks Californians to speak up -- the Governor is listening which, again, is a radically refreshing concept. Charmaine Yoest is glad to be wrong about Governor Schwarzenegger. Eugene Volokh wonders what the California Legislature is up to since the California Constitution is pretty clear on the subject thanks to the voters of California. Earlier thoughts.

    Arnold says he’ll veto… [UPDATE]

I’ll start with Captain Ed’s assessment and only offer a few corrections:

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger proved he is no girlie-man and stood up to powerful pressure groups and proved he is still Mr. Olympian. He will veto a law that would legalize gay marriage, despite the fact that in 2000 the majority of California voters overwhelming approved proposition 22 to ban such unions from being legally recognized. The law enacted by the California legislature sought to erase the votes of millions of Californians.
