Durbin Damage Done

Did Durbin apologize because Daley demanded it? Michelle Malkin highlights Daley's blunt calibration of Senator Dick:
Daley says Durbin -- a fellow Democrat -- is a good friend. But he says it's wrong to evoke comparisons to the horrors of the Holocaust or the millions of people killed in Russia under Stalin or in Cambodia under Pol Pot. And Daley says it's a disgrace to accuse military men and women of such conduct.
When Chicago speaks, Illinois politicians tend to listen. It is also heartening to read Daley list Stalin. Others played games and emphasized the Bush = Hitler brainwash (sure, throw Pol Pot in there, but unfortunately in our historically illiterate country, Pol Pot is just another cooking utensil). Regarding the apology itself (and The Political Teen has the video for you to view), Michelle rounds up Blogosphere reaction. I'm in the Blackfive and Technicalities camp -- there are no Ifs, Ands or Buts about the offense Senator Dick has dished out to our men and women putting their lives on the line. Way too little and Way Too Late for this political hack. Smash, however, accepts the apology at face value. Alas, the Legacy Media, as a herd, fails to understand the difference between our providing the finest medical care and fine cuisine (order your Gitmo Cookbook now!) to terrorists while Hitler, Stalin and Pol Pot killed the innocent. The depravity of moral equivalence on display is shameful, but many are shameless these days.

Thanks for the link. I’m off to check out Smash now… I hadn’t seen his take on it yet. Unfortunately I’ve lived in IL for many years and heard too much of Durbin pulling this garbage for too long to believe he’s the least bit sincere in his apology. People in other states very likely know little about him – he hasn’t been the highest profile guy around because he’s more of a Democratic yes-man than anything else.

Either you want him to say he’s sorry or you don’t. Make up your mind. As far as I can tell your only point in all this is scoring points for your sides. Good for you… you’ve scored a point. Yay Team!!!

Congratulations. Score one for the more of the same team.

Meanwhile the nightmare in Iraq continues… U.S. soldiers still die with no end in sight. Billions of our tax dollars are still unaccounted for. The rule of law continues to not apply to prisoners held in Guantanamo Bay.

Now as for me… I believe in the values that founded this nation: that everyone… EVERYONE… has certain rights.

Either you believe that or you don’t. Obviously you don’t if you are justifying keeping people indefinitely in a prison without charge, trial or representation. To me that is UNAMERICAN. A prison can be a Club Med but it is still a prison. (BTW, the fact that you are trying to make the place look like paradise at the same time as you are defending torture is laughable.)

Now you can ring your hands about words all you want. That doesn’t stop the abuses. It doesn’t bring our men and women home. It doesn’t stop any of the insanity.

Please wake me up when you want to talk about solving problems.

Senator Dick didn’t apologize, and our terrorist guests in Club Gitmo are not POWs.

What torture? Nice try at stealing a base, but your fevered hatred of W doesn’t make our military’s treatment of detained terrorists equivalent to The Final Solution.

So, letting terrorists free is not solving problems, and I’ll go back to sleep now, and let you wake me up when you really understand the difference between the US Military and the SS or KGB.

    Amen.

    > letting terrorists free is not solving problems

Guilty until proven innocent. That’s what you are arguing for. That is unamerican. Show me the evidence. Prove that they are terrorists. You are defending a politicy that is totally counter to the American legal system. The rule of law is what we fight for.

Now then…. I haven’t said one word for or against our President in this discussion and I haven’t said one word defending Senator Durbin’s comments. If I have a fervent hatred for anyone it is for Congress that has totally abandoned their constitutional obligations concerning the waging of war. I expect my President to fight as hard as possible for what he believes in. I also expect Congress to keep him in check. If he fails they fail. Simple as that.

Do I hate him. No… I actually pity him. The clock is ticking on when he can make a difference and he is leaving behind a legacy of failure that we will be cleaning up for decades.

As for torture… do I need to point you to the evidence? These are members of the FBI talking about this here. Maybe I’d better not. Right now the world is a much prettier place when your head is buried in the sand.

You want to fight the War on Terrorism in a courtroom. Quaint and Perry Mason would be proud, but not very effective. And, most importantly, not required by international law (since the cherubs are not lawful combatants).

Looks like we get to agree to disagree (sure, send me all the FBI files you can from Hillary).

On one point we agree: Our legislators are only in it for the paycheck and the stepping stone to the Presidency.

They don’t even remember how to declare War.
